NPR had a recent article on Santa Cruz surfers whom have been instrumental in getting their local beach breaks designated as a local World Surfing Reserve. The mission as stated on their website is as follows, “World Surfing Reserves proactively identifies, designates and preserves outstanding waves, surf zones and their surrounding environments around the world. The program serves as a global model for preserving wave breaks and their surrounding areas by recognizing the positive environmental, cultural, economic and community benefits of surfing areas.” All in all, becoming a World Surfing Reserve gives the local surfer a voice in city meetings and a leg to stand on when defending local breaks. The next World Surfing Reserve designation ceremony will be in Uluwatu, Bali in Indonesia.
